⛓ Intro to Kink in Performance ⛓

BIO

Layah Louder is your favorite Kinky Jewish American Godex! I’m ready to pray the gay to stay and slay the runway by night! My drag takes traditional jewish garments such as tefillin, tallis, yamaka and mixes them with the cross overs of the kink and leather world such as rope, chains, flagging, and the use of the structure of a BDSM scene. I am a magnetic performer who is unapologetically grotesque, hot, religious, trans, dynamic and thoughtful. I make alot of my stuff by hand but I am more than just a look queen.I use humor, pop music, and storytelling through my drag to fight for the survival for queer jews and religious queers to practice freely without judgment, to decriminalize and create awareness of the kink and leather community, and to humanize the trans community.

WORKSHOP/LECTURE ♿️ (Ages 18 +)

Bring a journal that you write a lot of your drag ideas in or some paper. Learn from Jewish kinky drag artist Layah Louder about how to infuse kink into your number. How do you negotiate when working with an assistant? What are some tools you could use and how do you use them. Also what is spiritual about kink and how does it affect how you can perform? By the end of this workshop you will have the beginning of a map of the seed of how to execute an idea that involves kink into your work.

Workshop Scheduled for Friday, Oct13 @ 5pm PST at The Castro Community Room, 501 St, SF CA USA

This class is open to all physical vocabularies. Many people visualize dances when they hear certain songs or think or feel certain things. All humans should have access to bringing those soul dances into the 3D, should they desire.

Drag as Spiritual Healing

Friday Oct 7 at 1230pm-130pm CST at Center On Halsted

MODERATOR : Rev. Todd Atkins-Whitley aka Blessya Hartz

Programs - Spiritual Care
Oakland, CA
(
He/Him)( She/Her)

As a cisgender, male-identified, white, gay person born into two dominant religions (America and Christianity), I engage the art of drag to help heal the wounds of toxic masculinity and misogyny upon my body and spirit while also transgressing patriarchal, sexist notions of God that bring harm to queer people. Drag is a new form of spirituality for me and I have found it so far to be liberating. It has also allowed me, as a religious leader, to hold space with folx who have been traumatized by purveyors of toxic religion.

PANELIST: Coco Sho-Nell was born in a small town outside of Gary, Indiana. And that town was called Chicago! Coco has been in existence for 13 years but as a theatre actor she has been performing for over 20 years. Coco is a theatre camp queen through and through. Most notable are Theo Ubique, Fox Valley Repertory, Northlight, Red Tape Theatre and Hell in a Handbag Productions, just to names a few. Most recently Coco was named runner up as Chicago reader's best drag entertainer of 2020 and was named the grand Marshall for the Buffalo Grove pride parade in 2022

PANELIST: "Nancy Nogood is what you get if Pussy Riot headlined the Grand Ol Opry. Born out of a mind corrupted by downtown Manhattan, she's appeared on stages and screens across the country with her signature blend of drag and performance art. PANELIST: christopher belmont (it/he/she) is a clown-inspired kingthing from chicago, IL. it believes and lives a life of freedom from gender expectations and norms, to live however you choose to live as your truest and wholest self. this ethos in drag has brought him joy, safety, and a newfound love for himself and the world around her. drag is a vessel for gender exploration to christopher, and that always leads to great joy, in it's experience. christopher has performed at clubs such as berlin, roscoes tavern, and charlies. he hopes to one day see more transmasculine and genderweird performances in chicago, as well as being a part of them.

PANELIST: King Julez (they/them) is a Masters of Divinity student, board chair for Affirm United/S'affirmer Ensemble, and future ordinand within The United Church of Canada. PANELIST: My name is Fyrestorm and I am a new Drag King on the scene from Columbus, Ohio. I've been performing for almost 2 years all around the Ohio and Midwest area. My tason performing range from in-depth character cosplays, to rock undead demon; to boy and realness. Originally I got into drag because I always wanted to be a performer. But a lot of it feel into the self discovery of who I wanted to be. I came out as trans in June 2022. This is an art form that I enjoy doing because it truly makes a difference to a new generation that hasn't had these kind of people to look up too.

Born Naked: Queering Our Religious and Spiritual Identities

The art of Drag teaches us - artists and fans alike - how to playfully break down the boundaries that society forces us into. In this interfaith panel, a group of Drag lovers will discuss how Drag influences our religious and spiritual identities. What do you love about your tradition? What does Drag teach you about going beyond your tradition? How does your tradition talk about our shared humanity, or our "born naked-ness" - Moderated by Danny Sanchez. (panelist TBA)

MODERATOR : Danny (he/him) is a Master of Divinity student at The University of Chicago. His studies focus on contemporary American spiritualities, and how technology interacts with our spiritual lives. His call to ministry is about building things (communities, tools, systems) that empower people to define, shape, and live into the spiritual spark inside of themselves, so that we can all live fuller, richer, more meaningful lives.

PANELIST: Lady Karley Marx - Lady Karley Marx is an American drag performer, painter, and pop artist. They are originally from Michigan but based in Chicago, Illinois. Marx's drag persona and name are a play-off of Karl Marx, Marxist/Communist pop-art aesthetics, and the intersections in critical theory, queer theory, and queer liberation theology. They are known for their surreal image reinventions, pop art paintings, and theoretical, artistic connections between art and popular culture and entertainment. Karley is inspired by drag activism (especially in the labor-town of Chicago), both pop-art/ARTPOP of the past half-century, Lady Gaga, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and queer mystics. Marx has partaken in a number of performances, both virtually and in public spaces. Marx is known to be an outspoken critic of American and global imperialism, neoliberalism, modern fascism, and all forms of oppression. In Summer 2022, Marx burst onto the Chicago drag scene performing at iconic venues and clubs such as Roscoe's Tavern, Charlie's Bar, Berlin Nightclub, and Hydrate Nightclub. Marx has worked with other passionate artists and drag queens, kings, and performers throughout the American Midwest and cannot wait to collaborate with more. Marx's goal is to interpret the world and act as a post-capitalist — to actively change the world for the better. They believe in constantly taking risks, praying daily, and thinking creatively that inspiration can be found wherever they look.

PANELIST: Kerrigan Greene

Kerrigan (they/them) is a queer Master of Divinity student who is fascinated in religious and spiritual rituals. This interest comes from their love of art. Since they grew up in the rural Midwest around trans and homophobic parents and peers, they have had little chance to participate in drag performance. Because of this, they are excited to be a part of this event and this panel. They grew up in the Disciples of Christ Christian denomination, where they are more active on a national level than a rural or state one, but they have been increasingly leaning towards Shintoism and Buddhism.

PANELIST: Laiylah Alf Wa Laiylah "A kinder-gentler Afrocentrist , an alchemist , an eonist , a dramaturge an erotic adventurer and a thespian ! I'm a Lover (and Writer) not a fighter but as a masculine (whatever that means) man aware of his innate Amazon " I Seek Peace even as I prepare for War"'

Writer of fiction , actor, US Army veteran, and drag performer that tries to infuse some element of connection in each performance. I enjoy a good dance number as much as the next queen but a song of heart break or disappointment is just as fulfilling when I'm onstage.

PANELIST: Natalie Delsemme (they/she) Natalie is a queer, kinky, relationship anarchist, and pagan(ish) hospital chaplain. Existing at intersections of the accepted and the unexpected, Natalie often navigates their life decked out in spiritual drag. Currently, Natalie is a Master of Divinity student at the University of Chicago where she studies spiritual care at the margins, explores how she can deepen community care at all levels, and expands the frontiers of what exactly we mean when we talk about religion.
